It’s a training  lab
The Culture Lab is based at the University of Maryland, College Park. It trains graduate students in the systematic analysis of culture with a methodological emphasis on content & interpretive analysis of texts. Research conducted in the Culture Lab is focused on analyzing cultural frames of social issues and groups; especially those linked to gender, race/ethnic, and class divisions in the U.S. and globally.

It’s a resource
As a research lab, we are especially interested in how scholars study and measure culture. We are motivated, here in the Culture Lab, to understanding the power of culture and its relationship to society, social inequalities, and health and well-being. To approach these big questions empirically, we must be able to measure aspects of culture systematically; to make it tangible and analyzable as a body of data. We provide an overview of methods particularly suited to the analysis of culture.

It’s a forum
We document ongoing scholarly conversations about different approaches to culture and to analyzing culture. What is culture? How can we measure and analyze culture? We provide links to seminal scholarship in this area, particularly within sociology. We also invite you to join the conversation and contribute your thoughts and insight on the conceptualization and measurement of culture. Follow Culture Lab on Twitter @culturelab2014.

Although there are a variety of important methods to employ in the analysis of culture, the Maryland Culture Lab currently specializes in content and interpretive analysis of texts. Visit the Content & Textual Analysis page to learn more.
