Overview

Choosing which software tools to use can be daunting. It's important to make the right choice because once you start manipulating your data in a particular software package, it is a lot of work and time to change to a different one.

For making decisions about software analysis tools, talk with your colleagues who can provide support and advice about options.  Also, check out the Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis site for an overview and some pros and cons of each software tool. Here also examine the Bibliography page for articles on computer software and data analysis.

See below for some information on some of the most commonly used Software Analysis tools.

Excel

One way to analyze data is through the use of Microsoft Excel or similar programs.  You can count frequencies, search for specific words, and color code your categories and themes.
